Sylvia’s Passion Project – Bab Empat

“Duh maaf, saya kira kamu mau posternya diantar kesini, my bad,”kata genie.

Sylvia merasa sangat beruntung, rasanya seperti dimanjakan alam semesta. “Yes please! Sini biar saya tuliskan alamatnya.” Ia bermaksud meraih penanya namun Genie menghentikan pergerakannya.

“Your wish is my command!” menggema di ruangan.

I need my beauty sleep; eye bags don’t make me feel pretty!

“Kalau memerlukan jasa saya anda tinggal melihat layar laptop,” katanya sambil berteka-teki. Lalu perlahan Genie mulai larut bersama asap.

Reluctantly, she saved the file and closed the window, Sylvia realized that she could spend another hour poring over the document but her eyes were getting too watery to read and her mind kept mixing up sentences. She’s too tired to make any more revisions to the document, and it should be good enough for submission as it is.

The lady rested her eyes for a moment and when she opened her eyes WishPlus was standing in front of her carrying a package. Sylvia’s eyes went wide; her posters are done!
“One hundred copies of the posters, fresh from the printers!” the Genie exclaimed. “Where do you want me to put these?”

Sylvia thought for a moment, summoned up whatever wass left of her brain power to produce an answer. “Um… actually I’m not in charge of distributing the posters , since I figured I’d be too busy with work. In fact, I don’t think I have enough time to drop these posters to the publication team.”

“Oh, I’m sorry, I assumed you wanted me to deliver them here, my bad,he said. “Would you like me to deliver them to the publication team instead?”

Sylvia couldn’t believe her luck, the universe was spoiling her. “Yes please! Here, let me write you their contact details.” She went to pick up her fountain pen, but the Genie stopped her.

“As much as I adore your penmanship, we do live in the 21st Century. How about you just update the cloud-based form?”

So Sylvia typed the details on her computer instead. “Just to make it official, and to make me feel like some sort of fairy tale character, I’m going to say this out loud.” Sylvia took a deep breath and confidently said,WishPlus, I wish you would deliver these printed posters to the publication team.”

The Genie winked and disappeared in a puff of smoke. “Your wish is my command!” echoed around the room.

Sylvia was still fanning out the leftover smoke around her desk when her phone started blaring. It was Maria from her publication team. “Look Sylvia, I know how driven and ambitious you can be, and I’m glad you got the posters done on time, but I don’t like having my precious me-time be disturbed by some weird fat guy knocking in this ungodly hour! I need my beauty sleep; eye bags don’t make me feel pretty!”

Maria kept ranting in her high pitched soprano voice for another full minute before Sylvia got the chance to apologize. “Well that was fast; instant even. Too bad it’s in the middle of the night,” Sylvia said to herself out loud.

“Do you always talk to yourself in the middle of the night?” WishPlus’s deep voice startled her from behind.

“Hey, big guy, good job on the delivery, but maybe next time you confirm and make an appointment first with the receiver, Sylvia continued, “Well this one is partially my fault, I didn’t specify when you should deliver them.”

“Ah, thanks for the feedback. I always try to find ways to improve myself,”  he said. “But I think my job here is done. Each client only gets three wishes and we did that with the design, print, and delivery,” said the Genie while counting with his stubby fingers.

“Yes that was three and I can’t thank you enough; you really saved me,” Sylvia said with a smile as she leaned back into her chair. “Are you just going to disappear from my life now? I don’t mean to sound like some needy little lady but I might be needing your services in the future,” Sylvia said hopefully.

“If you need services you can just look at your laptop screen,he said enigmatically. Then he began dissolving into smoke. “I’ll see you around, and don’t forget to wipe that drool, the Genie said as he began to fade out. Sylvia was confused and when she tried getting out of her chair to go after him, she woke up.

It was a dream! It was all a dream! Sylvia realized she accidentally fell asleep in front of the computer and that she still had a ton of work to do. She moved her mouse around, trying to wake the computer out of sleep mode.

I wish WishPlus was real,” Sylvia mumbled. And then she recalled what the Genie said before he disappeared. She wiped the drool from her face with anticipation as the screen began lighting up, and there it was in all its glory, the WishPlus Website! “It is real! I can actually submit my wishes and just focus on my job!

And that is how WishPlus, your printing Genie, helped Sylvia with her passion project.

Sylvia’s Passion Project – Bab Tiga

It’s magic!”

Sylvia kemudian menepuk dahinya sendiri.

“Nah sekarang kembali bekerja… Oh no!” jeritnya. “Kemana perginya laporanku, tadi belum di-save!

“Iya, iya, kamu Genie atau karyawan IT sih?” tanya Sylvia.

“Hehehe, kadang saya nyambi juga,” Kata Genie sambil mengelus janggutnya. “Jadi posternya 100 lembar, kertasnya jenis yang mana?”

Sylvia kemudian mengernyitkan dahinya. “Yang mana ya? Bedanya apa?”

“Jadi saya tinggal pilih mau seperti apa?” tanyanya.

Genie hanya mengangguk membenarkan.

Your wish is my command!” kata Genie, yang kemudian menghilang lagi dalam kepulan asap.

Hey how’s the work going?” WishPlus asked as he appeared from the corner of the room.

I only need to write this closing part,Sylvia said as she gestured to the screen

But when she turned her head back to the screen, she didn’t see the report she had been slaving away for the past hours. Instead there were three design alternatives displayed with their respective logos; they all looked attractive. “This is just what I wanted!”

Sylvia couldn’t hide her excitement. “Wow, you managed to make three design alternatives when I couldn’t even come up with one. She asked WishPlus, “How is that possible?”

WishPlus gestured his chubby hands in the air as he produced smoke and sparkles. “It’s magic!”

Sylvia gave herself a well deserved face palm. She totally forgot that she’s dealing with a magical being. The woman sat closer to the screen and paid closer attention to the details. This is cute but I want to switch the logo with the one you use here.”

Once again Sylvia rambled passionately about all the details so WishPlus could only nod along as he takes notes.

And I’m going to need 100 copies of the poster,” she finally said.  Now it’s back to work… Oh no!” she screamed. “Where did my report go, I haven’t saved it! I don’t want to have to start over from scratch.”

WishPlus rolls his eyes and touched the screen. Not in a magical way, but merely to minimize the preview window and show her the auto-saved version of the report. Make it a habit to periodically save your work.”

Okay, okay, are you a Genie or the IT guy?” Sylvia joked

Haha, sometimes I take sidejobs, the Genie said while he caressed his beard. So 100 copies of the poster; what kind of paper?”

Sylvia scrunched her forehead. What kind should I use? What’s the difference?” Sylvia wasn’t too sure about what would be her best option; sometimes she finds flyers that are just made too thick and even posters printed on material that are just too flimsy.

I usually just leave that part to the print shop, though admittedly I’m usually not happy with the results.

For this purpose the common choice would be Art Paper or Art Carton, with additional laminate coating if needed. There are several grammage options…

WishPlus was ready to explain in detail about the difference with each kind of paper, there are pros and cons for each. But Sylvia has beginning to display signs of exhaustion after a full day of activities, so WishPlus decided to snap his fingers and poofa stack of sample paper appeared.

Now this is more like it!” Sylvia  exclaimed before she began to dive into the samples and asking about each of the ones she’s considering WishPlus. Sylvia went with Art Carton 200 gsm for the A3 posters. “Ok, I’m beginning to feel sleepy and I still have to write that closing paragraph,” she said between yawns

WishPlus then began to mumble spells and making hand gestures, as if he was playing with invisible balls.  Sylvia watches attentively, waiting for the smoke to appear. But there was none.

Hahaha, those are just an act, I only need to snap my fingers,WishPlus said as he grins before finally snapping his fingers.

Several print samples suddenly appeared in Sylvia’s hands. The design changes she requested had been implemented and Sylvia can also see how the color is gonna appear once it’s printed on paper. So all I need to do is choose which one to go with?” she confirmed.

Genie nodded in confirmation. Does this mean I’ve completely fulfilled the first wish?”

Yes you have, thank you I really love the designs,” Sylvia said, she then handed one of the print samples in her hand. “I wish for 100 copies of this.”

“Your wish is my command!” said the Genie before disappearing in a puff of smoke.

Sylvia’s Passion Project – Bab Dua

Ucapnya sembari mengulurkan tangan.

“Saya WishPlus, your printing genie. Meskipun saya juga bisa sekaligus mengerjakan desain. Terima kasih sudah memanggil, jadi apa permintaan pertama anda?

“Apa? Saya tidak memanggilmu… tidak kan?” Tanya Sylvia.

No no no no, itu sama sekali bukan yang saya mau.”

Sylvia mengerjapkan mata sebelum menyerah.

Maka Sylvia pun melanjutkan penjelasannya, briefing berlangsung sampai setengah jam.

Tanya Sylvia.

WishPlus tiba-tiba muncul kembali. “maksudnya Back in a puff,” katanya sebelum menghilang lagi.

The screen started blinking rapidly; the intensity of the light it emitted grew stronger. Sylvia covered her face as she backed away, fearing an explosion. The screen went blank all of a sudden; Sylvia half-expected smoke to start billowing but there was none.

A hum began instead, and not the mechanical kind. It was a deep, melodious kind, like one of a baritone singer, and it grew stronger as the screen started flickering to life, showing what looks like a web page with a form. “What is your first wish?” the deep humming voice suddenly asked, but this time it came from a being.

Sylvia looked to her left and she was greeted by the sight of a being that resembles all the stereotypical visual cues western pop culture uses to portray a Middle-Eastern male genie. Sylvia made no attempt to disguise her surprise and disbelief but her curiosity got the best of her. “Who or what are you?”

The genie huffed and rolled his eyes, as if he was suddenly reminded of something he had forgotten. “I’m sorry. I was too excited to get back into action that I forgot my manners, he said as he extended his arms.

“I am WishPlus, your printing genie. Although, I can also be your design genie. Thanks for calling me up, now what is your first wish?”

“What? I didn’t call you up… did I?” Sylvia asked.

“Well technically you asked Google for an answer to your problem and here I am.”

WishPlus gestured with his hands. “You see, I used to be everyone’s go-to guy whenever they need to get some nice things designed and printed. But that was before,he said with a frown.

Sylvia relaxed in her chair after sensing that the genie meant her no harm. She was still trying to accept the fact that she was having a conversation with a genie but she felt safe around him. “Before what?”

“Before everyone decided to just steal images from search engines and create franken-designs with Photoshop, the genie lamented, “Is that what you want? I can’t give you those kind of designs. I actually care about originality and proper effective design principles.”

“No no no no, that’s absolutely not what I was looking for.”

Sylvia shook her head in disgust. “I want good designs. I don’t want an overused image pasted over with clashing fonts. I don’t want eyesores, but I also don’t want to just steal some other event’s logo and poster design. This is my passion project; I want the best.”

“Then what are you waiting for? Tell me your first wish,he said with a smile.

Sylvia batted her eyes before shrugging. “Who am I to refuse help from a magical being? At this point I’ll take anything I can get.”

She went rummaging through her notes and collected several pieces of references before turning back towards the genie. “I need a logo for my event and I also need a poster to publicize the event, she said before going on about the details and requirements.

“The theme is stronger and faster together so I need that to be conveyed in the design concept,” Sylvia started rambling, “Please don’t let the poster be mistaken for a Sci-Fi convention poster. It happened last year because the guy used a template he copied.”

WishPlus listened intently; he even asked permission to use Sylvia’s computer to complete his cloud-based form. “I’m magical but that doesn’t mean I’m old-fashioned and disorganized. Go on, what are the information you need on the poster?”

Go on Sylvia did; she briefed the genie for half an hour. “Look, I’m sorry if I sound too pushy but I just wanna cover all my bases here. I watched Bedazzled and I don’t want to get any weird incomplete wish by being too vague.”

Sylvia shivered at the possibilities from incomplete wishes. The genie smiled, making his rounded cheeks appeared even chubbier. “I understand; believe me this is not my first time handling this.”

He stood from Sylvia’s chair and gestured her to computer. “I believe you have other things to do tonight, why don’t you go work on them while I work my magic with the designs.”

He disappeared in a puff of smoke.BIAP” echoed around the room, in the same deep melodic voice.

“BIAP?” Sylvia wondered out loud.

WishPlus appeared instantly. “Back in a puff,” he responded and disappeared once again.

To say that Sylvia was dumbfounded was an understatement, but being dumbfounded for five minutes was a luxury she can’t afford right now. Sylvia took a gulp of water and got working on her report. She couldn’t remember how long she took to work on her report, but as she was nearing the end of the report a puff of smoke appearedfor the fourth time tonight.

Sylvia’s Passion Project – Chapter One

“This is so exciting!” Sylvia exclaimed. There was over 150 new emails in her inbox from people interested in coming to the Powerkarta Racewalkers 2017 annual gathering. She clicked some of them at random and skimmed quickly. The responses are generally positive, with most wanting more information about the event and asking for posters to be put up around their areas. “We’re going to bring members of the community together in one place and do all kinds of activities.” She was actually feeling giddy, excited about her decision to be the chairperson of this year’s annual gatheringg

“I need to make some posters to be distributed,” she mused, “but I want it to look good, not just a bunch of images and text on an overused template.”

“Are you talking to yourself again?” a drawling voice with a teasing tone suddenly interrupted her thoughts.

“Oh Bill! I didn’t see you come in.” Sylvia said as she quickly minimized the browser. Her supervisor is strict even though he is very supportive towards her hobbies and activities outside of work.

Bill rolled his eyes knowingly, “Look, Sylvia, I understand that you’re really passionate about your racewalking community, but I don’t want to see my innovation officer abandoning her work. I need the first quarter report on my desk by the end of next week.”

He drops the stack of data printout on Sylvia’s desk then leaves her room. But after a few seconds Bill popped his head back into Sylvia’s room just to say, “Don’t forget to design a stunning logo for your event, you know it’s going to be used in all the materials. Good luck organizing that gathering!”

– A week later-

Sylvia rushed home after her regular post-work practice session. According to her timeline she has to distribute the posters this weekend, yet she hasn’t even designed the event logo, let alone the poster. Dealing with all the other aspects of the event certainly took more time than she originally thought, not to mention balancing all the other areas of her life.

“I have to come up with a design tonight!” so she sat on her desk and sketched away for hours… without any success. She was interrupted by an email notification.

Bill Shakes

Reminder: Q1 Report due tomorrow.

Sylvia jumped out of her seat, fidgeting and breathing erratically as she circled the room to release some of the adrenaline rush. “No no no no no… How did I get myself into this overloaded mess?”

As she stopped to catch her breath, she looked back, scanning between the pieces of paper filled with unfinished sketches strewn around the desk mixed with brochures, references and the brown paper napkins she used to wipe the coffee stains. She has lost her sanity for sure. She still has to deal with the venue and sound vendors, manage the social media campaign, plus her boss is asking about the report. “I don’t have time for this! Ok Google, where can I find a genie to deal with this logo and poster thing?!” she screamed in frustration.
